Nestled in the rolling hills and valleys of Juniata County in central Pennsylvania, Smith Lumber has a long heritage of quality lumber production. In 1871, Jacob Smith purchased the tract of land where the sawmill currently sits. Initially, the family cut firewood, hewed railroad ties by hand, and collected bark for local leather tanneries from the land. In 1909, Jacob's son Daniel, grandson Lucian, and great-grandson Banks purchased a Frick steam-powered sawmill. The steam engine is long gone, replaced by a diesel engine, but still powering a Frick sawmill.
Roy Smith, the fifth generation in this milling tradition, and his family saw timber cut from that same tract of timber that has been sustainably harvested for nearly 140 years. We also purchase timber from small tracts that many other loggers find too small to interest them.
With preservation of the forest community and full utilization of the harvested tree as top priorities, Smith Lumber produces railroad ties, pallet lumber, furniture grade boards, softwood dimensional lumber, woodworking craft stock, sawdust, and firewood.
